MPs attack ministers on Bahrain stance
By James Blitz in London and Michael Peel in Abu Dhabi
Britain came under fresh pressure over its diplomatic relations with Bahrain on Tuesday after a group of MPs criticised ministers for taking too lenient an approach towards the kingdom’s breaches of human rights.
In a development likely to add to tensions between the UK and Gulf states – most notably Saudi Arabia – the Commons foreign affairs committee said Britain should have placed Bahrain on its list of “countries of concern” following the “brutal” suppression of Arab Spring protests last year.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has been accused of having double standards when it comes to human rights – boycotting some countries but working with others if it is in the UK’s interests to do so (especially those with whom it does trade, such as selling arms): here.
Bahrain still a controversial subject for Formula One: here.
