Northerners get set for October 20 demonstration

Monday 08 October 2012

WORKERS across the north are gearing up for the TUC’s A Future That Works demonstration in London on October 20.

Huddersfield’s trade union council will hit the streets this Saturday from 10am to hand out leaflets and raise support.

Nearby, Calderdale Save Our Services has organised transport from Todmorden, Hebden Bridge and Halifax.

Bookings came in in such quantity that a second coach may be organised. A benefit concert to raise money for transport will take place at the Trades Club in Hebden Bridge tomorrow night.

Bradford People’s Coalition Against the Cuts has two coaches leaving Norfolk Gardens in the city centre at 7am.

And three hundred members and relatives of NASUWT’s Yorkshire and Humberside region will travel to London on coaches and trains from Leeds, Sheffield, Doncaster, York and Hull.

Yorkshire and the Humber TUC has organised the train from Leeds.

NASUWT regional organiser Martin Copson said: “The response has been really good, with members angry at Michael Gove and the government‘s attack on education and teachers’ pay and conditions, and wanting to take a stand.”

Across the Pennines in Lancashire, Bury trades union council is organising a coach to pick up people from Bury and Rochdale. Those wanting to go should ring 07856 291-570.

  1. Future needn’t cost the earth

The 20 reasons to march poster missed the fight to tackle climate change. The Tories are undermining emissions regulations and renewable energy. They are backing their friends in fossil fuel industries.

We will be marching as a climate bloc with organisations which have signed the statement calling for action to tackle climate change including creating climate jobs.

We will be marching under the slogan, “For a future that doesn’t cost the earth, against austerity and for climate justice.”
