Even US hawks don’t believe in Afghan war

While some of the beautiful flowers of Afghanistan still flower this month, the bloody war continues. Though most people in the USA, including some hardly to be expected people, oppose it.

Defense hawk backs US withdrawal from Afghanistan

WASHINGTON — One of the strongest defense hawks in Congress says the United States should withdraw its forces from Afghanistan amid increasing signs that even Republican proponents of the war believe it’s no longer worth the cost.

Rep. C.W. Bill Young, R-Fla., said in an interview this week that “we’re killing kids who don’t need to die.”

Young’s comments reflect the growing weariness with a conflict that has dragged on for more than a decade, with polls showing more than 60 percent of Americans opposing the war and military fights drawing little of the public’s attention. Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney didn’t even mention the troops or the war in his convention acceptance speech last month, a striking omission for a GOP candidate.

When President Barack Obama took office in 2008, there had been only around four such attacks. The “Green on Blue” killings leapfrogged after the President ordered his military surge in 2010 in tandem with the announcement of the 2014 withdrawal. Half the American military casualties occurred after the Pentagon implemented its counter-insurgency (COIN) strategy in Afghanistan more than two years ago: here.

Is the Afghan Surge Really Over? Here.

Not with a bang, but a whimper: that seemed to be the operating principle for the Obama administration in announcing that the last of the “surge” force sent to Afghanistan in late 2009 has now been pulled out of the war-torn country. A total of 33,000 US troops have left Afghanistan, while 68,000 remain, mainly deployed in the southern and eastern districts: here.
