Pakistani blaze bosses face murder charges

Pakistan registered murder charges today against Karachi factory bosses and government officials over the deaths of 289 people in the country’s worst industrial disaster, police said.

The owners of Ali Enterprises, some of their management and several government officials have been charged for “showing utter negligence to provide adequate security to the factory workers,” said local police chief Mohammad Nawaz Gondal.

The police are hunting for the factory owners who have not been seen since the blaze. The government has ordered an inquiry and officials said the owners have been barred from leaving the country.

The National Trade Union Federation said that safety measures had been ignored at the factory.
