Palestinians protest against rising prices and pay delay
Monday 10 September 2012
People across the West Bank shuttered their shops and blocked roads with burning tyres today in protest at their government‘s failure to rein in rising prices and pay civil servants.
There were clashes in Hebron after protesters smashed windows and tried to storm a council building.
Police beat some demonstrators and hurled tear gas.
It follows several weeks of small but growing strikes.
People blame Prime Minister Salam Fayyad. But the US and Arab countries have blown a hole in his government’s budget by not handing over promised aid money.
The protesters are the largest show of discontent with the Palestinian Authority in its 18-year history.
