The Long-tailed Duck has one of the most distinctive vocalizations of any tundra nesting bird. The Lab’s Charles Eldermire describes the calls of this loud and garrulous species.

My mother is from Estonia. She said this deep sea bird was a common guset at their farm by the Finnish Gulf. It is called Aul in Estonian because they call out the voice aulii—auliii when we hear them!
