Tory twit in trouble after Twitter rant

Sunday 29 July 2012

Tories tried desperately to distance themselves from the right-wing rants of Aidan Burley MP at the weekend after he labelled the Olympic opening ceremony “leftie multicultural crap.”

The Tory MP for Cannock Chase criticised the ceremony on his Twitter site tweeting that it was “the most leftie opening ceremony I have ever seen — more than Beijing, the capital of the communist state! Welfare tribute next?”

He later penned: “Thank God the athletes have arrived. Now we can move on from leftie multicultural crap.”

Mr Burley, who was sacked as parliamentary private secretary after attending a nazi-themed stag do last year, argued that his comments had been misunderstood.

The tweets sparked a backlash of opposition on the social networking site, including from fellow Tory MPs.

Conservative MP for Croydon Gavin Barwell said: “Londoners are rather proud of the diversity of our city — nothing left-wing about it.”

And footballer Stan Collymore, who hails from Mr Burley’s constituency, said: “I’ll happily stand against you at the next general election. You have no clue about our town or its people.”

Labour MP David Winnick said: “A great number of people in Cannock, including many who voted for him, will be wishing they had a different MP.”

Danny Boyle’s London 2012 Olympic opening ceremony on Friday night featured sequences showing industrial chimneys and the rise of the working class.

Indeed. But the rise of the working class as a class doing work, not as a class standing up for their rights, as this blog has pointed out.

Another sequence dedicated to the legacy of the NHS showed volunteer nurses dancing around hospital beds.

London Mayor Boris Johnson, when asked whether the ceremony was too left-wing for him, said: “Not at all. I cried like a baby.”

Mr Burley was dismissed as parliamentary private secretary to Transport Secretary Justine Greening after attending a nazi-themed stag do in the skiing resort of Val Thorens in France last December.

The event included toasts to the Third Reich and nazi salutes.

The disgraced MP also spearheaded the official launch of the anti-union Trade Union Reform Campaign in January in Westminster.

Among the campaign’s key aims include cutting off payments to trade union reps for duties carried out during company time.

A Downing Street spokesman simply said of Mr Burley’s tweets: “We do not agree with him.”

  1. IOC member accused of nazi salute during opener

    Sunday 29 July 2012

A man who appeared to perform a nazi salute at the London 2012 opening ceremony has been named as honorary International Olympic Committee member Walter Troger.

During Friday night’s celebrations to mark the start of the Olympic Games, the German team walked on with Mr Troger appearing to raise his left arm in a diagonal forward and backward motion, similar to that used by supporters of Adolf Hilter.

Footage of Mr Troger’s gesture went viral on social network sites and immediately drew stern responses in the international media.

Der Tagesspiegel newspaper reported that even if it was “only” the left arm “a touch of involuntary Berlin 1936 was in the London opening ceremony air.”

“The greeting of yesterday was brought back to the present.”

But German Olympic Sports Federation spokesman Christian Klaue rejected claims that it was a nazi salute.

“It’s infamous, disgusting and unacceptable to create any kind of relation to nazis.

“He’s been standing all his life for tolerance, understanding and fair play,” he said.

  2. ‎”Radiation and rockets at the London Olympics you ask? Yes, more than 7,000 tons of radioactive debris pushed just to the side to build the Olympic stadium and anti-aircraft missIes anchored on the rooftops of private London residences. War games, military and private security forces patting down the throngs at a cost of £1 billion ($1.54 billion) just for “security” alone, this is the straw which has finally broken the camel’s back for my lifetime of Olympics watching.”

  5. Nazi costume Tory aims to kill off trade unions

    Monday 08 October 2012

    by Will Stone in Birmingham

TORIES vowed yesterday to “squeeze the lifeblood out of the unions” so the party can win the next election.

The Trade Union Reform Group fringe meeting, attended mainly by young Tories, heard its chairman Aidan Burley warn that trade unions are the “political enemies of the Conservative party” and must be stopped.

He praised Cabinet Office Minister Frances Maude’s plan to cut the amount of time trade union reps in the Civil Service spend carrying out duties but lamented that they “do not go far enough.”

The disgraced Tory MP for Cannock Chase, who attending a nazi-themed stag party at a ski resort in France, attacked Unison and its “hard-line general secretary Dave Prentis” for moving offices.

Attendees laughed when he joked that the meeting clashed with a Twitter event. Mr Burley notoriously described Danny Boyle’s Olympic opening ceremony as “leftie multi-cultural crap” on the service.

Mr Maude expressed his “privilege” at working alongside Thatcher in the 1980s during his speech, in which he spelled out a massive attack on trade unions in the Civil Service.

“One thousand trade union reps paid by the taxpayer to spend a week at the union’s seaside conference? Forget it,” he said.

“We will more than halve the cost of facility time to the taxpayer. Proper control. Rigorous monitoring. This is a new world and the old ways have to change.”
