Spanish miner speaks in England, video

This video from Britain says about itself:

Segundo Menendez Collar – striking Asturian miner – addresses Unite the Resistance conference

The economic crisis and austerity measures have brought misery to millions of workers and poor people across Europe.

But the turmoil at the top has been met with resistance from below. Right wing governments have been thrown out of office and strikes in Greece, France, Spain and Portugal have shaken the bosses.

In Britain we have seen the biggest strike since 1926. Millions struck to defend their pensions. Some workers have now been out four or five times.

We are at a crucial stage in the battle against austerity. The Unite the Resistance conference gives activists and trade unionists a chance to debate how we take this fight forward.

  1. New anti-union laws on horizon

DEMOCRACY: EU-inspired Monti 2 regulations planned for Britain could see the courts preventing workers striking based on how much disruption it is judged to create, activists learned yesterday.

RMT president Alex Gordon explained: “A judge could rule industrial action is disproportionate to the disruption it will cause.

“At the moment they can’t do that, but if Monti 2 comes in they will.”

He vowed that RMT would take the call to the TUC to get behind the campaign for getting out of the EU.

    Women ‘vital in capitalism fight’

EQUALITY: Women have an essential role to play in struggle to end capitalism, Communist Party women’s organiser Liz Payne said yesterday.

Speaking at the close of 21st Century Marxism she said: “It is obvious to me that women are coming into the struggle.

“The important thing is to do everything possible within the labour movement, for communists to focus on, is to engage women and keep them engaged.

“The women’s question is a central part of the class struggle.”

  2. Abortion law attack meets opposition

SPAIN: A collective of Spanish women’s rights groups protested in Madrid today against a planned attack on abortion rights by the country’s reactionary government.

“The reform will send the law back to an era close to the Franco dictatorship and it distances Spain from the vast majority of European nations in terms of women’s rights,” the collective said.

Spain’s conservative government announced on Friday that it would alter a law introduced by its Socialist predecessors in 2010 which gave women the legal right to abortion on demand for up to 14 weeks of pregnancy.

  3. Spanish miners end their strike

The majority of Spanish miners have ended their solid all-out strike and returned to work. The 8,000 miners, from the north western Asturias region, walked out against government cuts to coal subsidies.

They went back to work after securing assurances that none of the miners would be sacked.

Manel Ros, an activist in Barcelona, told Socialist Worker, “I think this is a step back but the situation is still flammable. The attacks on the pits and the communities remain.

“It’s been a long struggle and in the summer here everything shuts down. This might explain why they have gone back now. But September offers new possibilities depending on the general political situation.

“The struggle could start again, even if it is simply on the basis that workers have nothing to lose.”

  5. Strike by Spanish rail workers against privatisation

A one-day strike by rail workers took place last week, over plans to privatise the railways.

The strike, which involved employees of the Spain’s two state-owned railway companies Administrador de Infrastructuras Ferroviarias and Red Nacional de los Ferrocarriles Españoles, caused major disruptions to the country’s train services.

The government’s official rationale is to sell off the railways in a bid to reduce the country’s budget deficit. Around 100,000 jobs are believed to be at risk. Further industrial action is planned for September 17.

  6. Police nab five ‘Robin Hoods’

SPAIN: Police have arrested five left-wing union activists for their alleged role in a Robin Hood-style robbery made to highlight the plight of people suffering through the country’s recession.

The southern Andalusian Workers Union made news on Tuesday when a handful of its activists made off with nine trolleys full of food from a supermarket in Ecija and left without paying.

They later handed the food to the unemployed.
