MoD to fill the ranks with mercenaries

Private contractors and part-time reservists were unveiled by Defence Secretary Philip Hammond on Thursday as the Tory solution to plug gaps created by the axing of 20,000 forces personnel.

Addressing the Royal United Services Institute in London he said the military would have to think “innovatively about how combat service support is provided” and use “more systematically the skills available in the reserve and from our contractors.”

The changes would involve having to “rethink the way we deliver every aspect of military effect in order to maximise capability at the front line,” he said.

War on Want executive director John Hilary said: “The decision to put outsourced contractors at the heart of defence policy is a recipe for disaster.

Private military and security companies have a track record in profiting from war, conflict and political instability at the expense of security and human rights.

“The British government has already played a large role in the growth of this industry by endorsing their widespread use in Iraq and Afghanistan and allowing the industry to police itself.

“It is time to put an end to this creeping privatisation of war.”

US veteran Graham Clumpner, Truthout: “I could see things deteriorating every day. Our contact with the locals only isolated us and made things worse. Our treatment of the prisoners was what changed me. When they were blindfolded and handcuffed, it was easy to see them as less than human. So, we treated them that way. The medal I returned outside the NATO summit was the Global War on Terrorism Medal or GWOT. I refer to it as the Global War OF Terrorism. That’s what we are, the purveyors of terror to the people of Afghanistan and Iraq”: here.
