Cholera and occupation in Haiti

This video is called Inside Story – Haiti‘s cholera epidemic.

Withholding Water: Cholera, Prejudice and the Right to Water in Haiti. Deepa Panchang, Other Worlds: “Scientists have shown that the cholera pathogen came to Haiti with foreign UN troops who carried the bacteria in their bodies, and whose military base was dumping its sewage into a nearby river. The imported disease has claimed more than 7,000 lives and continues to ravage communities across Haiti. Despite billions in post-earthquake aid dollars and hundreds of humanitarian NGOs, the country still faces a dearth of water and sanitation services, further fueling the epidemic”: here.

UN Under-Secretary General Rebeca Grynspan highlighted on Monday in Ecuador that, without Cuban physicians, it would have been impossible to respond to the cholera epidemics in Haiti: here.

The strain of cholera brought to Haiti by Nepalese UN soldiers in 2010 has spread to the Dominican Republic, Cuba, and now Mexico. In the past few months, Mexico has reported 176 confirmed cases of the disease, with one death. 57 of the victims have needed hospitalization: here.

  9. UN PEACEKEEPERS in Haiti pressed more than 225 women into having sex in exchange for food and medication, a report due later this month will reveal.

The draft by the Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS) looked at the way UN peacekeeping, which has about 125,000 people in some of the world’s most troubled areas, deals with the persistent problem of sexual abuse and exploitation.

It found that about a third of alleged sexual abuse involved under-18s, that assistance to victims was “severely deficient” and that the average investigation by OIOS, which said it prioritised cases involving minors or rape, took over a year to complete.

Investigators interviewed 231 people in Haiti who said they had had “transactional” sexual relationships with UN peacekeepers.

For rural women, hunger, lack of shelter, baby care items, medication and household items were frequently cited as the ‘triggering need’,” the report said.
