Trump hunting story stirs major hornets nest – TV sponsor withdraws from ‘Apprentice USA’
Donald Trump Junior elephant hunt
March 2012. The story that Wildlife Extra ran last week about Donald Trump Junior and his brother Eric shooting an elephant a leopard, a crocodile and various other animals on a hunting trip in Zimbabwe has stirred up a real hornets’ nest. The story has reappeared all over the world, and created heated debates and much revulsion as well as some support for the Trump brothers. (One thing that is noticeable is the Wildlife Extra is virtually never credited, which is disappointing).
The Trumps have defended their actions, but the huge groundswell of ill feeling that they have generated has now been joined by some concrete action in some quarters, with US firm ‘Camping World’ pulling their sponsorship from Donald Trump’s ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ TV show. Several thousand people have tweeted their feelings (see Twitter) with many people threatening to boycott Trump businesses.
TV Sponsor pulls out
According to celebrity tittle tattle website TMZ (Who thus far have refused to acknowledge Wildlife Extra as the source of the story):
“Donald Trump’s sons’ bloody hunting trip in Africa last year didn’t just put a dent in the local wildlife population — it exterminated a lucrative advertising deal on “Celebrity Apprentice” … by scaring away a big sponsor. Camping World CEO Marcus Lemonis tells TMZ, the company’s TV spots already aired on this season of “Celebrity Apprentice” — but he insists, “I wouldn’t spend another nickel with them.”
Marcus adds, “I am totally disgusted by the [hunting] pics I have seen and was surprised to see them … Money is spent but wow I’m really shocked.” …
Wildlife Extra is not against all hunting, but there [are] right and wrong ways to do it. However it is done, to pose with the dead animals and to claim that you did it for the benefit of the local villagers is just wrong. Posing alongside the dead animals and publishing the photos can only be to show off your prowess to others – Look how tough I am, I killed a wild antelope from long range with a high powered rifle.
