In the best original screenplay category, the deserving J.C. Chandor, for Margin Call, and Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi, for A Separation, were passed over in favor of Woody Allen (who was not in attendance), for the latest in a recent series of flat and unsuccessful films, Midnight in Paris.
Farhadi’s film, however, did win as best foreign feature. The work deals sensitively with social tension and conflict in contemporary Iran. The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly Farhadi’s acceptance speech, which included these words: “At this time many Iranians all over the world are watching us and I imagine them to be very happy. They are happy not just because of an important award or a film or a filmmaker, but because at the time when talk of war, intimidation, and aggression is exchanged between politicians, the name of their country, Iran, is spoken here through her glorious culture, a rich and ancient culture that has been hidden under the heavy dust of politics. I proudly offer this award to the people of my country, the people who respect all cultures and civilizations and despise hostility and resentment. Thank you so much.”
In the midst of the unrelenting effort by the Obama administration and the US military to find a pretext for an assault on Iran, the bestowing of the award on Farhadi, whether the academy voters perceived him as a “dissident” or not, has undoubted significance. The director-producer’s presentation was dignified and moving.

‘19% of Israelis support non-US-backed Iran strike’

Poll finds vast majority of Israelis against unilateral military strike on Iran, Israeli Jews prefer Obama over all republican rivals.
Only 19 percent of Israelis support an attack against Iran without the backing of the United States, a new poll released on Wednesday found.
In the poll conducted by Shibley Telhami, Brookings Nonresident Senior Fellow and the Anwar Sadat Professor for Peace and Development at the University of Maryland, 42% of respondents said they support a strike against Iran only if there is US support for the move. Nearly a third (32%) of those polled oppose an attack regardless of US support.
According to the poll, 38% of Israelis believe the US would support Israel diplomatically if the Jewish State carried out a unilateral strike against Iran, whereas 27% of respondents think Washington would join in militarily to support Israel even if it struck the Islamic Republic without US approval.
The survey also polled Jewish Israelis’ feelings on the US presidential race, with respondents preferring US president Barack Obama to all his potential Republican rivals.
Overall, among Israeli Jews, Obama led Santorum 34% to 21%, Gingrich 31% to 27%, Paul 34% to 24%, and Romney 32% to 29%.
The poll’s conductor Telhami concluded that “the Israeli public is neither enthusiastic about the prospect of war with Iran nor swayed by the seeming embrace of Israel by our presidential candidates.” He added: “They have to live with the consequences of war, and they appear to take the American assessment of these consequences seriously.”
The poll was conducted from February 22-26 by the Dahaf Institute among a nationally representative sample of 500 Israelis.

German FM’s visit to South Caucasus aimed at testing waters in case of Iran war?
The true goal of German Foreign Minster Guido Westerwelle’s tour to the South Caucasus was to disclose the local countries’ attitude towards the Iran issue, according to German expert Alexander Rahr.
“The German Minsiter’s visit pursued the goal of disclosing the region’s attitude to the Iran problem, as well as possible political scenarios in Azerbaijan in case the West launches anti-Iranian military operations, and whether NATO bases will be open in the South Caucasus, including Azerbaijan,” the expert told Interfax-Azerbaijan.
According to Mr. Rahr, Germany bears special responsibility on the Iran issue.
“Germany as a non-permanent member of UN Security Council has a special responsibility regarding the issue. In this context, the UN may take highly crucial decisions necessitating an urgent action regarding hostilities against Iran or tightening sanctions. I deem the German FM’s visit to Azerbaijan absolutely conceivable. One must test the waters to disclose the standpoint of Iran’s neighbors,” the political analyst said.
German Foreign Minister noted that Germany will continue backing sanctions against Iran until the nuclear issue gets settled…The Minister noted that Germany stands against Iran’s use of nuclear energy for military purposes and will further pursue sanctions policy through cooperation with the rest of the EU partners until Iran abandons its nuclear program.
