Qatar’s ruler says foreign troops should be deployed

Sunday 15 January 2012

Qatar‘s ruler declared on US television today that foreign troops should be sent into Syria to “stop the killing” in the country.

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani’s comments to the 60 Minutes programme on the CBS network are the first statements by an Arab leader calling for the deployment of international forces inside Syria.

Asked whether he was in favour of Arab states intervening in Syria, Sheikh Hamad said that “for such a situation to stop the killing some troops should go to stop the killing.”
