From Dutch NOS TV today [25 October 2010]:
Miniskirt ban in Italy creates stir
In the seaside town of Castellammare di Stabia, dozens of women have demonstrated in front of the town hall against a proposal to ban miniskirts.
For readers who think that “dozens” is not much: this is a small conservative town, with few traditions of demonstrating for or against anything.
That’s a plan of the mayor, who wants to teach residents decency. During the demonstration many policemen were deployed.
The mayor also wants a ban on sunbathing in public, on swearing and on playing football in parks.
Premier Berlusconi gave mayors the power to impose such bans to combat anti-social behavior.
The worst perpetrator of anti-social behaviour in Italy is Mr Berlusconi himself. Not women choosing themselves, as opposed to on Mr Berlusconi‘s orders, to wear miniskirts.
If the council agrees, violations of the bans may lead to fines of 25 to 500 euro fines being imposed.

this reminds me of a news story once in Macon Georgia where a woman was fined and given 7 days in jail for sending a 7 year old girl to school in hair curlers even though she wore a scarf. when my daughters were young it was considered a sin for yuong girls to wear pants especially to church where a few old battle asses though they were gods chosen. however when their grand daughters and daughters got a little older and began to wear themn it was ok. you even began to see old women walking around in church in pans suits and eventuall erverywhere in those terrible sinful jeans. the roman catholic church has already caused so much suffering in asian, africa, and the america by pure murder when exploration first began and later by the church’s rule on birth control which led to over population in every country they controlled. The best bet for the women of the town would be a good ole fasbhioned ass whipper for his honor the mayor and ride his butt out of town, tar and feathers and all

it sounds like the mayor is the antisocial, himself, not the women; and what is so wrong with playing soccer in the park?

You’re right. However, in the context of the whole of Italy, not the mayor of this small town, but the boss of the mayor’s “Freedom” Party and Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi, is the most anti-social person.

What’s wrong? people you should listen to yourself… What’s wrong in exchanging sex for positions of political power? Should I really be asking this question? The media is trying to make this protest look like a bunch of ugly uptight women angry for some sort of sex scandal… and you’re falling for it.
