  1. Wrecked oil ship resumes leaking

NEW ZEALAND: A wrecked cargo ship that split in two over the weekend started leaking more oil today.

Maritime New Zealand official Bruce Fraser said that fewer than 100 tons of oil remain on the wrecked Rena — which spilled about 400 tons of fuel oil when it ran aground on October 5 on Astrolabe Reef, 14 miles from Tauranga Harbour on North Island, fouling pristine beaches and killing up to 20,000 seabirds.

The two pieces of the ship are now too precarious for crews to attempt further salvage efforts, at least until the seas calm.
