  1. Mubarak trial brought to halt

EGYPT: The trial of former president Hosni Mubarak has been halted after lawyers for the families of protesters killed during the uprising which overthrew him demanded a new panel of judges.

It was not known why the lawyers made the request but it was believed to be connected to the testimony of Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, who served as Mr Mubarak’s defence minister and now heads the ruling junta.

His Saturday testimony was given under a media blackout.

A court will rule on the request tomorrow.

If accepted the trial will have to begin again.
