Pamiers dismay, after the death of four soldiers in three weeks
Jul 14, 2011
Killed in Afghanistan Wednesday of a lieutenant and a sergeant of the 1st Parachute Regiment of Pamiers hunters has caused consternation in the small town of Ariège [department], already saddened by the loss of two soldiers killed in late June on the Afghan front. …
Elsewhere in the city, the criticism comes about France’s commitment in Afghanistan.
Died in battle? “They died for nothing,” say most often the people of Pamiers, who are used to cross the red berets of the first PCR.
“We had nothing to do there. The Russians have broken teeth was their Vietnam. We are the French, it is not better than them. I think our military has better do than go to the other side of the world. The withdrawal, fine, but our dead, it’s too late,” joked one trader.
Louis Bauer, a retiree whose son is in the first PCR, protests against the attack which it considers “rogue”.
“Go blow up people like that, it’s a shame. I, Afghanistan, I do not even know where it is on a map. What is it that war, they are doing all these only Afghans. This is our fourth death, it can not go on like this, these stories,” he says with an air of regret, “that because of widows and orphans.”
