The two newborn eaglets in the sea eagle nest in the Oostvaardersplassen have been ringed. This said a spokesperson for the Forestry Commission this Friday. Through the rings it is possible to follow the birds’ whereabouts.

“We would like to know where the birds go and where they hang out” the spokesperson said. “If we know, then we will be able to find out if they are breeding.” According to Staatsbosbeheer, a bald eagle ringed in 2008 [in the Oostvaardersplassen] was found in the Lauwersmeer. “It’s not yet sure whether this is one of the birds breeding there [this spring].”

It is the sixth consecutive year that the bald eagle couple is breeding successfully in the nature reserve. The two eaglets are about one month old and both weigh over 3 kilogram.
