Wildlife Extra reports from England:

Great tit sets up home in ash tray

Several birds had eyed up site as potential nesting place

April 2011: With the birds’ breeding season in full swing, the RSPB is inundated with calls about birds choosing unusual sites to build their nests and raise their young.

But one great tit has picked a particularly bizarre nest site, and is preparing for its breeding attempt in a cigarette ashtray. Visitors and staff at the RSPB’s Fairburn Ings nature reserve near Castleford in Yorkshire, have been watching birds doing a ‘recce’ of the area for a few weeks prior to the start of the breeding season.

Both blue tits and great tits inspected the ashtray as a potential nest site. Last week, it became clear that the great tit had won tenancy, as it was spotted entering the ashtray a few times. The ashtray has now been put out of bounds for a few weeks until the birds have left the area and a separate bucket of sand provided for smokers visiting the reserve.

Laura Bentley, RSPB Fairburn Ings Visitor Manager says: ‘We’d seen a few birds checking out the ashtray and we did wonder whether they might be considering it for a nest site.

‘We’re delighted to see they’ve chosen this spot’

‘We found moss and nesting material nearby and when we peered through when the bird had left the area it was clear a nest had been built inside. These pictures show them about to enter their new home and although it might not be an obvious choice, we’re delighted they’ve chosen this spot to try and raise their young.

‘However, smokers beware, we are an ashtray down as obviously we’ve had to make sure no one else uses it for a while.’

Some of the other unusual nest sites already reported this year include in an old teapot, a wellington boot, under a car boot and behind a satellite dish.
