ITUC ‘shocked’ at bus driver killings
SOMALIA: The International Transport Federation (ITF) and the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) expressed shock today over the murder of nine public-transport workers this week in Afgoye, a town 20 miles south of Mogadishu.
The six drivers and three conductors working on commuter minibuses operating between Mogadishu and Afgoye were reportedly gunned down on August 14 by al-Shabaab militants after refusing to pay protection money.
In a message of solidarity to Federation of Somali Trade Unions deputy president Ibrahim Ahmed ITUC general secretary Sharan Burrow said the killings were “shocking and unacceptable.”
ITF Africa regional secretary Joseph Katende said: “Transport workers are vulnerable to such attacks and it is for this reason that the workers have organised themselves into unions.”
