Hungarian Rightist regime bans Gay Pride

Part of the mass movement which drove out Egyptian dictator Mubarak is the Egyptian gay rights movement.

Maybe it is time to drive out the anti-democratic “Mubaraks” of the Hungarian government next.

Hungarian EU presidency faces embarrassment over Gay Pride ban

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS – Hungary’s reputation in the EU is facing another potential battering after Budapest police blocked Gay Pride marchers from gathering in front of parliament later this year.

Tamas Dombos from the Hungarian gay rights group Hatter Support Society told EUobserver on Tuesday (15 February) that police are likely to give the go-ahead for a different route for the rally, due in June, but that this is not the point.

“The organisers decided to make the event more political than in previous years. We need the march to end in front of parliament in order to increase our visibility,” he said.

In an embarrassing twist for the Hungarian EU presidency, the police used the EU chairmanship itself as justification. The official decision says tourists coming to see a presidency photo exhibition in parliament square could be vexed by the marchers, Mr Dombos reported. It also says official motorcades relating to presidency visits could be obstructed.

Hungary is representing the whole of the EU, not just in Europe, but worldwide, and this gives a bad message. The EU is supposed to stand up for human rights,” the campaigner added.

The march comes in the context of a general swing to the right under Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s Fidesz party.

Rights campaigners are worried that a Fidesz-proposed constitutional amendment will make it impossible to legalise gay marriage in future by defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

They are also concerned that Annamaria Szalai, the head of Hungary’s new National Media and Telecommunication Authority, has indicated she will use her sweeping powers to protect what she calls “family values.” Ms Szalai earlier in her career edited a pornographic magazine called Miami Press.

Asked if he thinks that Mr Orban is a homophobe, Mr Dombos said: “He is a political strategist. His party has changed its position so violently it’s hard to know what they really think and what are political games.”

For its part, Brussels on Tuesday fired a warning shot. “The European Commission has no legal authority to intervene in how member states organise public meetings. When implementing national law, member states must respect fundamental rights, including freedom of expression and assembly, as required by their own constitutional order and international obligations,” it said in a statement.

Dutch liberal MEP Sophie in’t Veld said: “We cannot accept the EU being led by a presidency that disrespects equality and freedom of assembly.”

The Gay Pride organisers first complained to press on Valetine’s Day in a move designed to maximise pain. The Hungarian presidency has already come under fire at EU-level for trying to curb press freedom, harvest extra taxes from foreign firms and for putting a carpet in the EU Council building showing Hungary with enlarged borders.

When asked about Gay Pride by EUobserver on Tuesday, the Hungarian mission to the EU said the Hungarian government should answer the questions. The Hungarian government then passed the hot potato to the Budapest police, with a reply pending.

  1. Activists push for hate crime action

South Africa: Rights activists rallied outside parliament on Monday to press ministers to address sexual violence, violence that targets lesbian and gay people and hate crimes.

Luleki Sizwe, which means “guide a nation,” a small group of lesbian activists in the townships of Cape Town, also circulated an online petition calling on Justice Minister Jeff Radebe “to address ‘corrective rape,’ the increasingly common hate crime in which men rape lesbian women to ‘turn’ them straight or ‘cure’ them of their sexual orientation.”

The most notorious cases include the 2008 death of Eudy Simelane, a star of South Africa’s women’s national football team. Ms Simelane, a lesbian, was gang raped, beaten and stabbed. Two men were jailed while two others were acquitted.

  2. We won’t kiss goodbye to LGBT awareness

It is rumoured that David Cameron wants to see gay kisses banned on pre-watershed TV.

A right wing Tory commission sees the Brookside soap’s breakthrough 1994 lesbian kiss as a cause for concern.

The problems with the “Review of the Commercialisation and Sexualisation of Childhood” run deeper than just the homophobia of singling out this kiss.

If some Tories have their way, young people will have their understanding and exploration of sexuality further restricted.

Anti-abortion Tory MP Nadine Dorries wants to see the teaching of sex abstinence to stop Britain’s relatively high level of teenage pregnancy.

But what young people need is sex education that engages with their burgeoning sexuality and teaches them how to have sex safely with contraception.

Seeing gay people kissing on TV is a positive part of this.

The Tories have more homophobic skeletons in their supposedly “pro-gay” closet.

They have an ideological and economic interest in upholding “the family”. This is why they will seek to scapegoat anyone seen to not live their life in the right way.

The people trying to turn the clock back cannot be allowed to succeed. It’s right to distrust Cameron on LGBT rights.

  3. World against homophobia

EVENT: Millions of people around the world marked the seventh International Day Against Homophobia today.

Homosexuality is still illegal in 77 countries around the world and in seven countries women, men and children are punished for their sexuality with death sentences.

Ugandan gay rights campaigner David Kato, who sued a local newspaper which outed him as homosexual, was beaten to death in January.

A recent attempt by the Ugandan parliament to reintroduce the death penalty for “aggravated homosexuality” was dropped after widespread international outrage.

TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said: “‘International Day Against Homophobia is an opportunity for unions to highlight the suffering of LGBT people all around the world and demand improvement – both in the workplace and in the wider community.”

  4. 150 celebrate gay pride

ROMANIA: Around 150 people attended a colourful gay pride march in Bucharest on Saturday, calling for “sexual diversity and acceptance.”

The march took place hours after a few dozen anti-gay activists held a “rally for normality” which condemned homosexuality.

Homosexual activity was decriminalised in Romania in 2000, but gay activists say they still suffer from discrimination in the country.

The march passed off peacefully, but the homophobic activists said they would continue to hold rallies as long as gay pride marches continued.
