UNITED STATES: Air traffic controllers will get an extra hour off between shifts to discourage sleeping at work.

Officials rejected proposals to allow on-the-job napping to deal with fatigue.

“On my watch, controllers will not be paid to take naps,” said Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.

But flight safety experts said the decision showed “politics remain more important than public safety.”

The new rules follow a string of incidents where hard-pressed workers have fallen asleep on the job.

In 2006 an airliner crashed, killing 49 people, after an exhausted controller who had worked five eight-hour shifts in four days failed to notice it taking the wrong runway.
