ISLAMABAD – Two NATO helicopters Friday fired into the North Waziristan tribal area in northwest Pakistan near the Afghan border and injured three people, local sources told China’s Xinhua news agency.
Witnesses said two NATO helicopters were hovering for 10 minutes and fired at Lawra Mandi village of Datta Khel area in North Waziristan.
The village is one kilometer to the border. Local administration confirmed the attack, saying the three injured have been shifted to a hospital in Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan.
In Islamabad, no official confirmation is available yet for the violation. It was not the first time that NATO helicopters fighting in the neighboring Afghanistan have violated the Pakistan’s territory.
Weeks ago, some NATO helicopters fired at some suspected militants’ hideouts on the Pakistani side, killing three Pakistani border troops.
The United States has mounted its pressure on Pakistan to wage a new operation in the restive North Waziristan tribal agency, but Pakistan says it will make its own decision.
