  1. Government to end conscription in 2011

GERMANY: Defence Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg has announced that the country will end conscription in July 2011, replacing its current military force with a volunteer service of around 185,000 troops focused on missions abroad.

Mr Guttenberg said on Monday the German military’s missions abroad should serve as the “measuring stick” of the new Bundeswehr.

The former state of West Germany introduced conscription after World War II to ensure that the military never again became an elitist force with political clout.
