  1. Adviser resigns at gold mine plan

Romania: An adviser to President Traian Basescu resigned today, citing differences of opinion over a controversial gold-mining project in Transylvania.

Peter Eckstein Kovacs said he strongly opposes the Rosia Montana gold mine project, which he calls “bad business” and ecologically damaging.

The president has said he favours the investment by Canada’s Rosia Montana Gold Corporation because it would bring jobs.

But opponents say the open cast mine would damage ancient monuments in the area and destroy the face of a mountain.
