GERMANY – Leading banker accused of racism agrees to resign
Thilo Sarrazin, a board member of Germany’s central Bundesbank embroiled in controversy after he made disparaging remarks about Muslims and Jews in a book, has agreed to resign, sparing the government of having to decide whether to dismiss him.

This is the first of a two-part series.
Nearly a month has passed since Der Spiegel magazine and the Bild newspaper published extracts from Thilo Sarrazin’s book, Germany Abolishes Itself. Since then, a full-blown campaign against Muslim immigrants has been launched, claiming that they resist integration into German society. Social problems such as high unemployment, the existence of so-called “social hot spots” and “parallel communities,” and low educational attainment are blamed on the immigrants themselves.

A German insurance company got into trouble for citing the Koran in its refusal to compensate a Muslim accident victim for the cost of hiring a maid. Muslim men leave the housework to their wives, a clerk for the Gothaer insurance firm argued. The company has apologized: here.
