Over 900 Dutch clerical abuse claims

From DutchNews:

Catholic church abuse claims rise to over 900

Wednesday 25 August 2010

Over 900 people who claim to be victims of sexual abuse within the Catholic church have registered with the government commission investigating the scandal, commission chairman Wim Deetman says in an interview with Wednesday’s Volkskrant.

‘There are victims who just want to tell their story and have it investigated. And there are a lot of people who want help,’ Deetman told the paper. A number of abusers have also come forward, he said.

The scandal broke at the end of February when newspapers reported claims of abuse at a boarding school in ‘s-Heerenberg in the 1960s and 1970s.

A retired Church of England priest and a former organist and choirmaster have been found guilty of a string of child sex abuse offences dating back more than 25 years.

A judge said that Father Keith Wilkie Denford and Michael Mytton had committed “a grave breach of trust and a gross breach of trust.”

Prosecutors said Denford, 78, used the respectability of the cassock to groom and abuse two boys over an 18-month period from when they were aged around 13.
