Japanese mass anti US military base protest

This video says about itself:

26 April 2010 — A US Military base is being protested by over 100,000 people on the island of Okinawa, located to the south of Japan. Under a 2006 agreement with the US, the US Marines’ Futenma base was to be moved from the centre to the coast. But demonstrators want Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama to stick to an election pledge to remove it completely.

A rally of 90,000 people in Okinawa on Sunday against the continued presence of a US Marine air base has heightened the political crisis facing the Japanese government over the issue: here.

Thousands of Japanese citizens linked hands and encircled a US military base in Okinawa on Sunday to protest against its presence on the island: here.

  1. PM says sorry for Okinawa U-turn

Japan: Embattled Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama has apologised to the people of Okinawa for ditching his campaign promise to move a US military base off the island.

During his party’s campaign for last year’s elections that swept him to power, the PM had promised to relocate the US marines’ Futenma air station off Okinawa, perhaps even out of Japan.

But he recently conceded that the government had decided to build another base on Okinawa, but in a less crowded area, enraging residents and provincial authorities.

  2. Guam residents sue US navy

UNITED STATES: Groups and citizens in the US territory of Guam filed a lawsuit against the military on Wednesday, alleging it violated federal environmental and historic preservation laws by choosing an ancient village as the site of a new firing range.

In September the navy said it wanted to build the training site at one of two sites in Pagat village. The range would be used by marines due to move to the Pacific island from Okinawa in Japan.

The lawsuit accuses the navy of failing to adequately consider alternative locations. It also alleges the military failed to adequately examine the environmental consequences of its actions.
