  1. Unemployment climbs past 20%

Spain: The official unemployment rate has passed 20 per cent for the first time since 1997.

The National Statistics Institute released a statement on Friday saying that at the end of March there were 4,612,700 people out of work in the country, equating to a jobless rate of 20.05 per cent.

That is the highest since the last financial quarter of 1997, when it stood at 20.11 per cent.
