Wageningen university students have protested against cutbacks, threatening to close down the university’s arboretum.
While the Rightist Dutch government still spends lots of tax money on the bloody war in Afghanistan … and billions to bail out bankers who caused the economic crisis … cutbacks threaten universities, including botanical science.
Translated from Dutch Vroege Vogels TV:
2010 is the Year of Biodiversity, but that does not stop Wageningen University and the Free University of Amsterdam from threatening to close their arboretum and Botanical Garden down. The collections, carefully collected during a long time, supposedly are no longer relevant for modern research. Professor Pieter Baas, president of the National Plant Collection Foundation (SNP) considers that “lunatic”.
