Mass strikes against the coup in Honduras have continued to sweep the Latin American nation.
A statement from the Frente Nacional de Resistencia – Resistance Front Against the Coup d’Etat – that was released to Caracas-based Telesur news revealed that all the country’s airports were now closed after ground crews joined other airport workers in walking out.
As a result, the Honduran national airline TACA has been forced to suspend all national and international flights, Telesur stated.
The airport workers are the latest to join an indefinite general strike that is taking hold against the de facto regime led by Roberto Micheletti.
Teachers who have been on strike for eight days and hospital workers who have refused to work for the last four days were also joined by electricity workers downing tools at the weekend.
Union leader Ramon Garcia declared that “we are now on an indefinite strike until the democracy that was interrupted by the coup d’etat is restored.”
The strikes are a clear sign that the regime led by Mr Micheletti, who was installed as an “interim” leader by the Honduran military after President Manuel Zelaya was arrested and exiled on June 28, has not succeeded in imposing his authority on the country.
Mr Zelaya, a wealthy rancher who was elected as the candidate of the centre-right Liberal party four years ago, had moved to the left during his presidency to embrace the Venezuelan-led Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas economic bloc and prioritise the fight against poverty and illiteracy.
Such steps alienated the traditionally corrupt conservative elite that had kept Honduras‘s poverty rate one of the highest in Latin America. But rather than wait for the next presidential elections in November – in which Mr Zelaya was constitutionally not permitted to stand for a second term – the military deposed him.
Mr Micheletti claims that he is now consolidating his control of Honduras and his deputy foreign minister Martha Lorena Alvarado insists that “the more time that goes by, the stronger we become.”
But one of the leaders of the Frente Nacional, Juan Barahona, countered the regime‘s claims to assert that the mass strikes taking hold across Honduras “shows that the popular resistance against the de facto regime is gaining strength and continues to grow.”

President Barack Obama may have condemned the recent Honduras coup, but it’s emerged that before President Manuel Zelaya was ousted, a Honduran right-wing coalition had been receiving US money.
The Democratic Civil Union of Honduras, a group formed of business interests and political parties, was a driving force behind the coup.
Most of the union’s members have been the beneficiaries of the more than $50 million annually disbursed by the United States Agency for International Development and the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) for “democracy promotion” in Honduras.
The benign-sounding NED was founded in 1983 by the Reagan administration and, says the Cato Institute’s Barbara Conry, was “designed to assist democratic movements abroad in ways that were beyond the reach of established federal programmes.”
The NED would “operate more freely and, at the same time, escape the stigma attached to US foreign aid in many parts of the world.”
To begin with, all NED funding came from the federal budget, but since 1994 private donations, including from the major oil companies, have been accepted.

The International Action Center is calling on the anti-war and progressive movement to participate in National Days of Solidarity with the people resisting the coup d’etat in Honduras on the two month anniversary of the coup Friday, August 28, 2009.
In addition, we have just learned that the resistance forces against the coup in Honduras have placed an emergency call to the international community to hold any kind of action in solidarity with their struggle on Tuesday, August 11. That day tens of thousands of people who have been mobilizing from all parts of the country since August 5, will converge in Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula to demand that constitutionality be restored in their country.
On August 28, it will be two months since the June 28 indefensible coup. August 11 can be a day to hold press conferences and/or pickets announcing the August 28 National Days of Solidarity in addition to expressing national and world wide solidarity with people of Honduras.
We call on all progressive individuals and organizations from all sectors: antiwar, immigrants, community-based, religious, youth and students, women, LGBT, labor, cultural, etc. to join in this effort and make them Days of Repudiation of the criminal coup d’etat, in solidarity with the resistance in Honduras and to demand from the United States an immediate end to any aid and support to the illegal government in Honduras.
Background: On June 28, the legitimate President of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya, was forcibly taken from his house by the country’s military at gunpoint and taken outside the country. An illegitimate and criminal government was installed with Roberto Micheletti as its President.
It has since then ruled by extreme force and repression of the masses, with constant curfews, mass detentions, assassinations and multiple acts of violence perpetrated by the police and the army who have established in Honduras a state of siege where human rights violations are committed constantly against the majority of the people who are demonstrating against the coup. It has violated as well the freedom of expression, closing radio and TV stations that were reporting what was happening.
The international community with the exception of Israel, has condemned the coup. Latin American countries recalled their ambassadors, the ALBA countries, the SICA, the Rio Group, the OAS and the UN have all imposed sanctions to the illegal government.
Yet these actions are not enough. The Micheletti government, emboldened by the United States’ government refusal to recall its ambassador and cut ALL TIES and AID and follow through with severe sanctions agreed upon in the OAS, has only intensified its repressive actions by heavily armed police and army against a defenseless, unarmed poor population who are vehemently opposing this criminal coup.
In spite of the unrelenting repression, under tear gases and live ammunition that so far have killed 8 people, injured scores and detained more than 1,500, the people, organized under the National Popular Front of Resistance against the Coup (FNPCGEH), have been on the streets daily since June 28 courageously demonstrating to bring back their elected President Zelaya, to restore constitutionality in the country and for their right to have a Constitutional Assembly to forge the future that they want in their own country.
THE ONLY SUPPORT THAT HOLDS THE COUP D’ETAT IN HONDURAS AND PREVENTS THE RETURN OF DEMOCRACY IN THAT COUNTRY IS THE UNITED STATES. The U.S. is Honduras’ major trading partner and has used that country as its military outpost against the Nicaraguan and Salvadoran Revolutions in the 80’s. It is in Honduras where the criminal “Contras” operated, trained by the infamous School of the Americas. The Honduran military is intimately linked to the Pentagon from which receives every kind of material aid and weapons, assistance in training, surveillance and military actions.
Support the demands of the Popular Front of Resistance:
1. The immediate, safe and unconditional reinstatement of President Zelaya to the presidency;
2. release of all political prisoners, end curfews, stop repression and all violence against the people;
3. punishment of the coup leaders;
4. demand from the U.S.: to recall its ambassador, cut ALL TIES and AID and follow through with severe sanctions against Micheletti’s government agreed upon in the OAS.
In Addition, the IAC demands:
5. Expose the criminal complicit silence of the U.S. media on the repression occurring in Honduras and its biased reporting favoring the illegal coup

Since the military coup–after more than 38 days of untiring efforts by thousands of farmers, women, indigenous people, teachers, students, unionists, and ordinary citizens of the cities and the countryside to revert it and to recover democracy and dignity–the repression by the coup participants has not notched the fighting spirit of the heroic Honduran people. This struggle has now entered a crucial phase as the farmers movement and the National Front of Resistance Against the Coup d’Etat have summoned the social, union and democratic movements to a National March that begins on the 5 of August and will culminate on the 11 of August in Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula.

Labor protests continues in Honduras
The Honduran airline TACA suspended all flights into the country as a result of a strike by meteorologists, which has closed all of the country’s airports. The strikers are demanding the return of deposed president Manuel Zelaya.
The 95 meteorologists began their strike last Thursday, demanding the “restoration of the democratic system” in Honduras. “We have begun a strike of indefinite duration demanding the restoration of the democratic system that has been broken by the state,” declared Ramón García, vice president of the National Association of Meteorologists.
The military has occupied public hospitals and clinics in an attempt to end a strike by 8,000 public health workers. On August 7, the strikers marched to the streets of Tegucigalpa demanding Zelaya’s return. Some 5,000 workers rallied at the US embassy, demanding that US President Barack Obama intervene on Zelaya’s behalf. “This is the fourth time that we rally at the US embassy,” declared labor leader, Israel Salinas. “We are now saying that enough time has passed for the US to take the strongest of measures against those that carried out the coup headed by Roberto Micheletti.”
Attending the embassy rally were trade union representatives from Argentina, Brazil and Spain. In another part of the city hundreds of strikers and their supporters marched on the home of Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez, denouncing his support for the usurpers.

August 3, 2009 — Tegucigalpa — June 28 of the this year when the
Honduran population was preparing to participate in a popular opinion
poll on … whether or not to convoke a Constitutional Assembly,
thousands of soldiers kidnapped the constitutional president of the
republic, Manuel Zelaya Rosales, and they expelled him to the
neighbouring country of Costa Rica; they occupied the Presidential
House; they violently closed all of the independent radio and television
stations; they persecuted all the functionaries of the government and
they implanted a state of siege in the whole country.

On Wednesday, a 12-person delegation from the United States will be traveling to Honduras .
The purpose of the trip is to conduct a fact-finding investigation of the critical situation in the country.
The delegation must be permitted to enter Honduras . The continuing shut down of Honduras by the government that issued from the June 28 coup must be challenged.
The delegation calls on their elected officials, members of Congress and representatives of the media to take action to ensure the unrestricted entry and the success and safety of the U.S. delegation. With the long-term Soto Cano U.S. air base in Honduras (also called Palmerola base) and a history of training Honduran military officers, Washington plays a major role in any decision in that country.
Students, labor, clergy as well as peace activists are traveling to Honduras to learn about the critical situation in the country including a ban of constitutional rights. They aim to return and explain to the U.S. population all the facts about the current situation in Honduras , including the situation of those who have opposed the coup government.
The delegation will be in Honduras from October 7 through October 11, participating in a fact-finding delegation.
The delegation had planned to attend the “First International Conference Against the Coup D’Etat and for the Constituent National Assembly in Honduras ,” which was scheduled to take place Oct. 8-10. The conference is now postponed due to the political situation, which has grown tenser since President Manuel Zelaya returned to Tegucigalpa and found refuge in the Brazilian Embassy.
The U.S. Delegation is continuing its trip in order to meet with students, labor, women, youth, and representatives of the resistance to the coup and others to find the truth about the situation in Honduras .
On Saturday, Honduras will be the site of an important World Cup qualifying soccer match, expected to attract 50,000 people in San Pedro Sula . If the existing coup government of Honduras can not guarantee the safety of this small human rights delegation how can they claim to be able to guarantee the safety of such a large crowd, including many international visitors?
The National Lawyers Guild (NLG) led a delegation to Honduras in late August. Organizers of the delegation told the October 7 – 11 delegates that U.S. human rights presence is critical at this time and they support the efforts of the current fact-finding delegation.
The report of the NLG trip, which was written by members of the American Association of Jurists, the NLG and the International Association of Democratic Lawyers as well as the International Association Against Torture confirm that the June 28 events in Honduras constitute a genuine military coup. The report further states that the military overthrow “was a clear violation of Honduras ’ 1982 Political constitution.”

On the spot in Honduras: The people are still on the streets!

September 29, 2009 — Honduras — “Blood of martyrs, seeds of freedom”
was the slogan at the burial of Wendy, who died as a result of tear gas
this weekend. All “awakening has its price” and “Honduras has awoken”,
an activist from a Communist Party background involved in the resistance
told me at the ceremony for the comrade, held September 28 at the
national cemetery. Using Marxist terms, the comrade said that in
Honduras this awakening has meant that the movement has taken “a
qualitative leap forward”.
