US business lobby demands Scopes trial for global warming

Shanta Barley, reporter

The US Chamber of Commerce, the world’s largest federation of businesses, has demanded that the Environment Protection Agency hold a public hearing to put the science of global warming on trial, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times.

The Chamber apparently envisages the lawsuit as a 21st Century Scopes trial, the 1925 legal case that overturned the Butler Act, a law forbidding the teaching of evolution in US schools.

Huh? Don’t they realise that science won in that case?

In April, the EPA paved the way for strict regulation of greenhouse gas emissions by ruling that climate change is bad for human health – and therefore subject to the Clean Air Act.

Now, with only a few weeks left before the policy change becomes official, the Chamber of Commerce is fighting back, demanding a public hearing to “force transparency” from the EPA regarding its evidence for the decision.

Not that they’re being taken seriously. The move has been dismissed as a ploy to sow political discord and undermine global warming legislation. The EPA itself shrugged off the threatened lawsuit as both a “waste of time” and “frivolous”. Ouch.

Indeed, Brenda Ekwurzel, a climate scientist for the environmental group Union of Concerned Scientists, says that the Chamber’s campaign against climate change [science] is reminiscent of the Salem witch trials – “based on myth”.

  1. What group is doing the most to make global warming worse? The U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

That’s why top companies including Apple, Exelon Energy, Pacific Gas & Electric, Nike, and Public Service Company of New Mexico have all quit the Chamber.

If Ford wants to reduce global warming, it must break with U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

    Thanks for all you do!

To: William Ford Jr., Executive Chairman, Ford Motor Company
Subject: Ford must break with U.S. Chamber of Commerce

    Dear Mr. Ford,

I am happy to see that your company is supporting new national clean car standards. These standards will reduce U.S. oil consumption, cut global warming emissions, and save people like me money at the gas pump.

Unfortunately, Ford’s environmental commitments are undermined by its continued participation in the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber has sued the Environmental Protection Agency to prevent implementation of the new standards and is actively lobbying against other efforts to curb U.S. global warming pollution.

I therefore ask that you lead the board of directors to make a public break between Ford and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
