Two Chilean women living in the United States were so moved by the plight of people who were detained and disappeared during the 1973-1990 dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet that they overcame the problems of distance, and wrote a book reconstructing the personal lives of eight victims through the accounts given by their closest relatives: here.
Lula wants truth commission
Brazil: The government plans to create a truth commission to investigate the use of torture by previous military dictatorships, Human Rights Minister Paulo de Tarso Vanucchi said on Sunday.
He revealed that President Lula da Silva would propose a law creating the commission later this month.
Unlike Argentina and Chile, Brazil has never prosecuted members of the armed forces for human rights abuses committed during the 1964-1985 dictatorship.
