Scotland’s poorest citizens are far more likely to get the type 2 strain of diabetes than those in the most affluent communities, health campaigners have warned.
The charity Diabetes UK Scotland said research had found the incidence of type 2 was increasing at a higher rate in more deprived areas.
Those living in such areas are 64 per cent more likely to be diagnosed with the condition.
And they are twice as likely to suffer from complications, compared with those in the most affluent communities.
Campaigners have called for urgent action to stamp out pensioner poverty, following an EU report that nearly a third of Britain’s over-65s are virtually destitute: here.
Also from Britain: Workers over 50 are more likely to be sacked in the recession due to age discrimination, campaigners have claimed: here.
As the rich grow older, the poor die young: here.
