At least eight species of fresh water mussels have turned up around Sycamore Island in Blawnox during recent surveys of the environmentally unique habitat in the Allegheny River.
The 14-acre island in Blawnox is populated not by sycamores but by silver maples, and harbors a rare plant community that will be studied over the next year as will the island’s bird and aquatic life.
