Harvard staff are emailed cut plan
US: Harvard University President Drew Faust and human resources vice president Marilyn Hausammann have sent an email to staff warning that 275 face the chop due to plummeting endowments.
Harvard’s endowment income fell 22 per cent between June and October to $28.7 billion (£17.4bn).
The university has already frozen salaries, cut budgets and postponed the construction of a science complex.

End Violence against women
Every year on 25th NOVEMBER, the world celebrates the international day for the elimination of violence against women. Violence against women is not a question of the private sphere; direct violence against women is taking place in all areas. Every day, women and girls are subjected to domestic violence, exploitation, sexual violence, trafficking, honour crimes, harmful traditional practices, such as bride burning and early marriages, and other forms of violence against their bodies, minds and human dignity.
All forms of violence , especially against women and children constitute a breach of fundamental rights and a threat to well-being. They are prevented from enjoying the right of to enjoy a safe and a just citizenship.
In every armed conflicts, women and children are subjected to the torture most often in the forms of sexual violence. Rape, when used as a weapon of war, is systematically employed for a variety of purposes, including intimidation, humiliation, political terror , extracting information, rewarding soldiers, and “ethnic cleansing”. While fleeing war in their homelands, women are victims of rape and sexual violence at the hands of security forces, border guards, locals, smugglers, and other refugees. Unaccompanied women and girls are often regarded as common sexual property in refugee camps and may face forced prostitution as well as coercion into sex in exchange for food, documents or refugee status.
Afro-Asian Peoples’ Solidarity Organization calls upon all ngos, peace lovers and decision- makers to unite together and to eliminate violence against women and to ensure the integration of gender consideration within organizational structures as well as throughout all programs and projects. Humanitarian and development NGOs need to ensure that operational systems—including hiring practices, evaluation and reward processes and leave policies—are equitable and fair and they must also create mechanisms that require gender analysis at all program stages.
