DNA database must end, say delegates

TRADE unionists have demanded an end to the government’s “draconian” practice of keeping the DNA samples of innocent people on the police national database.
Earlier this year, the European Court of Human Rights unanimously condemned the “blanket and indiscriminate” DNA database in England and Wales, which keeps genetic tabs on anyone who falls under police suspicion.
The judges were particularly scathing about the gross over-representation of innocent black and ethnic minority people on the database.
On Saturday, delegates at the TUC black workers’ conference heard that black and Asian men make up 17 per cent of stored DNA samples, compared with just 9 per cent of white men.
UNISON delegate Bev Miller added: “Police have no right to take innocent people’s DNA and keep them just in case years later someone may commit a crime – this amounts to guilty before proven innocent.”
PCS delegate Mohammed Shafiq highlighted that 68 per cent of black people could be on the database by 2010 if nothing is done to stop it.
