Misleading survey on women’s pay under fire

Tuesday 07 April 2009

PUBLIC-SECTOR union UNISON condemned the findings of a new survey on Tuesday that claimed more than a third of women would rather have a thank you from their boss than a pay rise.

A survey of 1,000 women by cosmetics company Nivea claimed that more than 38 per cent felt that having their efforts recognised at work would make their working life better, compared to 15 per cent who said that a pay rise would do the same.

But UNISON general secretary Dave Prentis said: “This research is obviously just skin deep. Of course women expect common politeness and courtesy, as do men. But they also expect a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work. In the current climate, most of our members who are pretty low paid would like a decent pay increase. Thank yous do not pay the bills.”
