From British daily The Morning Star:
2,000 Iceland protesters call for government to step down
(Wednesday 21 January 2009)
AROUND 2,000 protesters rallied outside Iceland’s parliament on Tuesday demanding that the right-wing government resign for presiding over the country’s economic collapse.
They banged pots and honked horns and a few broke windows at the stone building, known as the Althingi, in a bid to disrupt the first session of parliament since the winter break.
Riot police fired pepper spray into the crowd and arrested at least 20 people.
Several protesters suffered cuts and bruises.
The demonstration caused a 15-minute delay to the parliamentary session, but no business was disrupted.
Iceland’s financial system collapsed in October under the weight of billions of dollars of foreign debts incurred by banks.
The government has since nationalised the country’s biggest financial institutions.
The Icelandic currency, the krona, has lost nearly three-quarters of its value against the euro over the last 12 months.
The Rightist government of Iceland used the people as human guinea pigs for the quack economic theories of Milton Friedman and his ilk. Like they used to do about Latvia, supporters of capitalism used to claim Iceland was a “success story”, proving how great their theories were. And look now…
