Birds used brainpower to survive extinction threat
Birds survived the catastrophe that killed off the dinosaurs because their brains were better developed, a study of fossils has shown.
Dinosaurs and early birds such as Archaeopterix [sic; Archaeopteryx] … died out during a mass extinction thought to have been caused by a meteor 65 million years ago, but modern-style birds, which had bigger brains, survived. Stig Walsh, of the Natural History Museum, said: “Life must have been challenging. The flexible behaviour of the large-brained individuals would have allowed them to think their way around the problem.”
