This event was moderated by Peter Little of the Ad Hoc Committee Against Racism and Fascism, which called the rally in opposition to the “Hammerfest,” a three day event to be taking place at a hotel in Sherwood, Oregon. Founded this September, the Ad-Hoc Committee is dedicated to monitoring and opposing white supremacist groupings in Portland and beyond. As large neo-Nazi rallies have often been preceded by attacks on Jewish people and people of color, sexual minorities, as well as activists, the Ad-Hoc Committee wishes to work with community groups and people of good conscience who want to respond to fascist mobilization.

“If we come together, the bigots don’t stand a chance,” says one committee member, “This rally is only a beginning.” Peter spoke about Portland’s racist past and the people’s struggle to protect themselves from racism. He states that racism takes many faces, is not only the obvious skinheads and neo nazi types, but also, among others, anti-immigration organizations. This is an ongoing theme throughout the Demonstration- that racism is insidious and is hidden all around us.

Peter introduced speakers with experience from many different fronts of the ongoing threats from and struggle against racism. First to speak was Walidah Imarisha, a spoken word war-rior woman who fights the power with protest poetry. She speaks eloquently about how these groups have co-opted the language of the left, often sounding like environmentalists and other progressive groups. Walidah finishes by reciting one of her poems.

Next to speak was Claire Oliveros, of the Portland Committee for Human Rights in the Philippines, followed by Pablo, who spoke in Spanish with a translator about the Latin American economic conditions leading to immigration to the U.S. Pablo was followed by Amy Dudley, of the Rural Organizing Project, who spoke at length about the various racist and anti-immigrant organizations. She gives much information about these groups, how they are organized and how they easily slip beneath the radar. www.rop.org

Man held for plotting to kill Obama

Washington (PTI): A Wisconsin man was arrested in Mississippi for threatening to kill President-elect Barack Obama on his January 20 inauguration, media reports said.

Steven Joseph Christopher, 42, was arrested by the Secret Service in Mississippi for threatening to kill Obama on the Internet, the US Department of Justice was quoted as saying by the CBS news.

Christopher, who reportedly made the threats on January 11, 15 and 16 in a chat forum on the site http://www.alien-earth.org, has been charged with threatening to kill Obama for “the country’s own good,” it said.

The department said that “threats against the president-elect will be taken very seriously”.

“Use of Internet chatrooms to express those threats is as much a crime as uttering the words. Threats of this nature will be pursued swiftly and vigorously,” it added.

He is being held until a bail hearing scheduled for next Thursday and if convicted would be sentenced to maximum five years in prison and USD 250,000 fine.

“I have decided I will assassinate Barack Obama. It’s really nothing personal about the man … But I know it’s for the country’s own good that I do this,” Christopher wrote in a posting on the website http://www.alien-earth.org on January 11, according to CBS news.

“It’s not because I’m racist that I will kill Barack, it’s because I can no longer allow the Jewish parasites to bully their way into making the American people submit to their evil ways,” he said.

So, Steven Joseph Christopher is apparently a racist indeed, and a nazi. The same kind of nazi that during the George W. Bush administration, was allowed to infiltrate the United States armed forces, because standards were lowered because of Iraq and other wars. Thus giving the extreme right access to military know how and weapons which they might use with disastrous consequences in the USA.
