Workers and some of their supporters at the occupied Republic Window and Door factory on Chicago’s near north side spoke with a team of reporters from the World Socialist Web Site on Tuesday afternoon, December 9, as their struggle approached a climactic end to its fifth day. Company management had fired the entire workforce the previous Friday, claiming that because the Bank of America had refused to extend credit the company was compelled to shut its doors in bankruptcy. The United Electrical Workers union won a representation election at the shop in 2004 and has been negotiating the terms of the shutdown with management.
The economic crisis continues.

Beginning Friday, around 300 workers at the Republic Window & Door factory in Chicago have occupied the plant demanding severance and back-pay owed by the company. For the first time since the birth of the CIO union federation in the 1930s, U.S. workers are occupying their workplace. As the bosses push to place the burden of the failing economy on workers’ shoulders, the class struggle is back on the agenda in the U.S.
