Seven US executions scheduled in next 10 days

Over the next 10 days, seven death row inmates are scheduled to be executed in the United States. Five of these condemned men are in Texas, a state that has carried out 15 of the 31 executions in the US so far this year.
Barring a last-minute reprieve, George Whitaker III will die by lethal injection at 6 p.m. Wednesday evening at the Texas execution chamber in Huntsville, north of Houston. The next day, prisoner Denard Manns is set to be put to death.
Three more Texas executions are planned for next week: Eric Cathey on Tuesday, November 18; Rogelio Cannady on Wednesday, November 19; and Robert Hudson on Thursday, November 20.
Two executions are scheduled in other states: Gregory L. Bryant-Bey in Ohio, and Marco Allen Chapman in Kentucky. Chapman would be the first person put to death in Kentucky in 10 years.
The US Supreme Court on Monday ordered a federal trial court to consider the case of Troy Davis, a prisoner on death row in George for the 1989 murder of off-duty police officer Mark MacPhail in Savannah, Georgia. The ruling came on a habeas corpus petition filed directly with the Supreme Court on Davis’s behalf: here.

California Under Schwarzenegger Continues Down A Perilous Path
As if bad could not get any worst! Gov. Schwarzenegger is being forced to deal with a 18 billion dollar budget deficit, which he has proven he cannot rectify nor his legislature without some drastic measures.
Guess what, he spent 10 billion on prisons in 2007-08, and plan to spent 8 billion on new prisons many of which is unjustly housing non-violent drug offenders who are mostly disproportionately non-white! If he did nothing else, he ought to revise those racist drug laws and start sending drug offenders to rehab centers instead of billion dollars (schools for criminal) prisons! By God, this alone would save his state billions. But knowing how Mr. Swatzenegger has done in the past – like killing Stanley Tookie Williams, I doubt if he would spend one second listening to anyone who made the same humane suggestion!
Can you imagine this, according to this article, Cali will in a few years, be spending more on prisons than on higher education! By comparison, no other big state is no where near the amount Cali spends on prisons. This should tell you a lot about what the priorities are in California under republican Mr. Swatzenegger! Because of his inane policies, California is now on the deathbed, and when you consider how fires and earthquakes also pose a problem to his budget and the state, the matter surely is likely to get much worst before it get better.
Just lock as many of us as you can, then throw away the keys!

Amnesty International USA: TAKE ACTION NOW!
Courts refuse to hear the full case that may prove Troy’s innocence. But if an innocent man is executed, then who will be held responsible for the murder of police officer Mark MacPhail?
Newly-elected District Attorney Chisolm can act now to save Troy’s life.
The Supreme Court will soon look at Troy Davis’ petition for a new trial. While we will be disappointed if the courts once again fail to intervene in a case that is so overwhelmed with doubt and a lack of evidence, Troy needs us to keep knocking on doors until one finally opens up.
Savannah’s new District Attorney, Larry Chisolm, elected in 2008 on similar principles as President Obama, could be that opportunity. During Chisolm’s bid for District Attorney, he laudably pledged to “increase the sense of fairness and transparency in the prosecution function.” If there ever was a case that required both fairness and transparency, then this is it. Urge District Attorney Chisolm to make good on his pledge by re-opening Troy’s case.
At the heart of this case is a brutal murder of a police officer that could go unpunished if an innocent man is put to death. The District Attorney has the power to re-open the investigation into this crime for which Troy was convicted. Only once we have all the facts on the table, can the courts truly begin to assess the fate of Troy Davis.
Troy Day of Action
At this point, no court has bothered to answer:
* why seven of nine prosecution witnesses have recanted or contradicted their testimony?
* why no physical evidence links Troy to the murder?
* why one of the two final witnesses has been implicated in many sworn statements as the real killer of officer Mark MacPhail?
Ask District Attorney Chisolm to re-open the investigation to uncover the truth behind officer MacPhail’s murder.
You only have to look to May 19th, the Global Day of Action for Troy Davis, to grasp just how much more there is to this case than meets the eye. Supporters across the U.S. joined voices with advocates from 14 different countries around the globe to demand real action for Troy.
Your actions continue to mean so much. In fact, Troy Davis and his sister, Martina Correia, were so touched by the outpouring of your support that they joined a call with Amnesty activists and staff to give their ‘thank yous’ in person. Listen to Troy Davis’ message to Amnesty activists (MP3).
We don’t know how much longer this fight for Troy’s life is going to last. But as long as there are people who can intervene to save Troy’s life, then we will keep pushing for justice.
