British government helps racism

This video is called Listening Post – Is the British media Islamophobic?

A video from Britain which used to be on the Internet used to say about itself:

An attack on four men at a mosque in Greater Manchester was fuelled by ministers’ comments about Muslim veils, it has been claimed. Mohammed Shafiq, of the Ramadhan Foundation, said comments from Jack Straw and Phil Woolas were to blame. Mr Shafiq, of the Manchester-based Islamic youth organisation, backed police calls for calm in the community, but said Muslims were becoming victims of violence because of politicians’ comments. He said: “This is another example of Muslims being attacked and persecuted and the responsibility lies with the politicians who have been on a feeding frenzy attacking Muslims and giving ammunition to thugs’ hatred towards us. “The responsibility for this lies with the likes of Jack Straw, Phil Woolas and others who believe it’s open season on Muslims. “People are extremely fearful now, especially the elderly people. “People think they might be attacked on the way to the mosque or even inside while they’re praying.”

From British daily The Morning Star:

Wrong on every count

(Sunday 19 October 2008)

IMMIGRATION Minister Phil Woolas‘s idea of setting a legal limit for the number of people coming into Britain is wrong on all counts.

First, it is unachievable, since all citizens of European Union states have the right of free movement throughout the EU. Nor can Britain legally turn away refugees who seek political asylum.

Second, it is based on ignorance of the current situation in Britain, since the government gave up checking on the numbers of temporary migrants who return home.

This is important in view of the growing evidence that many of the eastern European who came to work in Britain in the past decade or so have already left.

Experience shows that, whenever governments blame immigrants rather than systemic failures for shortages of homes or jobs, there is a consequent increase in racist and xenophobic crimes.

Colin Powell Opposes GOP anti-Muslim Bigotry

More on the Soldier Kareem R. Khan
    By The New York Times

On “Meet the Press” today, Colin L. Powell concluded his endorsement of Sen. Barack Obama by referring to the death of a Muslim soldier, Kareem Rashad Sultan Khan of Manahawkin, N.J., who was killed in Iraq on Aug. 6, 2007, and whose remains were buried in Arlington.

    Kareem Rashad Sultan Khan

He and three other soldiers, including a corporal from Washington Heights, were killed in Baquba after a bomb detonated while they were checking abandoned houses for explosives. They served in the Stryker Brigade combat team of the Army’s 2nd Infantry Division, based in Ft. Lewis, Washington.

Mr. Khan graduated from Southern Regional High School in Manahawkin in 2005, and enlisted in the Army a few months later, spurred by his memories of the 9/11 terror attacks. “His Muslim faith did not make him not want to go. It never stopped him,” his father, Feroze Khan, told the Gannett News Service in a story printed shortly after his death.

“He looked at it that he’s American and he has a job to do.”

Mr. Powell mentioned Mr. Khan’s death to underscore why he was deeply troubled by Republican personal attacks on Mr. Obama, especially false intimations that he was Muslim.

Mr. Obama is a lifelong Christian, not a Muslim, he said. But, he added, “The really right answer is, what if he is?”

“Is there something wrong with being Muslim in this country? No, that’s not America,” he said.

Mr. Khan’s death came to his attention, Mr. Powell said, when he saw a photo essay in a magazine about the deaths of American soldiers in Iraq. One picture showed a mother pressing her head against the gravestone of her fallen son in Arlington cemetery. It was the grave of 20-year-old Mr. Khan, engraved with his name, his military awards, and the Muslim symbol of the crescent and star.

“He was 14 years old at the time of 9/11, and he waited until he could go serve his country, and he gave his life,” Mr. Powell said. “Now, we have got to stop polarizing ourselves in this way.” Mr. Powell said that he had heard senior members of the Republican Party “drop this suggestion that he [Obama] is a Muslim and he might be associated with terrorists.”

“Now, John McCain is as nondiscriminatory as anyone I know. But I’m troubled about the fact that within the party we have these kinds of expressions.”

Mr. Khan had served in Iraq for just over a year, arriving in July 2006. He had sent home pictures to his family of him playing soccer with Iraqi children and hugging a smiling young Iraqi boy in Baghdad, according to his obituary in the Newark Star-Ledger.

He loved rooting for the Dallas Cowboys with his father, and challenging his 12-year old stepsister, Aliya, to video games. He last saw his family during a two-week visit in September 2006.

Campaigns speak out on landlord migrant checks

    by Felicity Collier

A “REPULSIVE” government snooping scheme that forces landlords to racially and ethnically discriminate against tenants must be scrapped, campaign groups warned yesterday.

The “Right To Rent” initiative was put in place across England last year and requires landlords to check the immigration status of new tenants by taking copies of documents such as passports or identity cards.

Landlords can be fined up to £3,000 per tenant for not undertaking checks, and face five years in prison for repeated failure to comply.

Legal campaign group Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants (JCWI) said that the scheme is “failing on all fronts” and should be stopped before it does any more damage.

It says that landlords who do not wish to discriminate are being forced to do so. British citizens who do not have passports would also be badly affected under the scheme.

Kojo Koram of the campaign group Homes Not Borders, which is taking action against racist and anti-migrant housing policies, described the scheme as “one of the most repulsive laws in recent memory.”

“This is really legislating landlords to discriminate against race and ethnicity,” Mr Koram said.

He is concerned that this will allow rogue landlords to exploit the measures and that it will impact on migrant populations.

He said he was reminded of 1960s and ’70s Britain when landlords put up signs that read “No Blacks, No Irish, No Dogs.”

Mr Koram said that the legislation ties in with similar measures currently being taken in schools and hospitals. He fears that it contributes to wider “anti-migrant” politics, with Right To Rent being used “as a vehicle for attacking some of the most vulnerable people in society.”

More than half of landlords were less likely to consider letting to residents from overseas due to the policy, research by the JCWI shows.

Its research concluded: “The Right to Rent scheme conscripts ordinary members of civil society into the immigration enforcement arm of the government.

“It does so in such a crude and ham-fisted fashion that it creates structural incentives for them to discriminate unlawfully against foreigners and ethnic minorities.”

It accused the government of being unable to provide evidence of any benefits to the scheme. The report also described guidance by the Home Office to landlords as confusing, calling the procedure “Kafkaesque.”

JCWI chief executive Saira Grant said that Right to Rent was “failing on all fronts.”

She added: “It treats many groups who need housing unfairly, it is clearly discriminatory, it is putting landlords in an impossible position. There is no evidence that it is doing anything to tackle irregular immigration.

“It is time to stop the scheme before it does any more damage.”

Last month, Homes Not Borders campaigners told the Star that the difficulties in providing documentation present “another obstacle for those with vulnerable migration statuses preventing them and their families from finding shelter.”

The group said that Right To Rent fulfils a wider government objective to create a “hostile environment” for migrants to make them feel “attacked, despised and under constant surveillance in their daily lives.”
