Australia has launched a new investigation into the death of one of its soldiers in Afghanistan earlier this month. The soldier was injured in an attack 25 kilometres north of the capital Kabul. A Dutch military surgeon in southern Afghanistan told an Australian newspaper that the injured soldier had to wait a long time for evacuation because US forces refused to send a medivac helicopter until a helicopter gunship was available to escort it. The Dutch surgeon said US controllers “forgot” to inform the Dutch troops at Tarin Kowt that the assigned Apache escort helicopter was undergoing maintenance. The soldier had reportedly bled to death by the time he was admitted to a field hospital.
