Thousands of Turkish army troops crossed the border with Iraq Friday in a major military operation against guerrilla forces of the Kurdish Workers Party (PKK), which has fought for decades against the Turkish state, seeking a separate state for the 15 million Kurds who inhabit southeastern Turkey.
The military action demonstrates the increasingly volatile conditions created by the US invasion and occupation of Iraq, which has destabilized the entire Middle East.

Stop de terreur van Turkije! Stop de invasie in Zuid Koerdistan!
Op woensdag 20 februari 2008 zijn minstens 10.000 Turkse troepen Zuid Koerdistan (Noord Irak) binnen getrokken. Al eerder, tijdens de luchtaanvallen die in oktober van start gingen kwamen burgers om het leven, werden scholen, ziekenhuizen en woningen vernietigd. Ook nu zal de burgerbevolking weer het meest te lijden hebben – twee bruggen in de buurt van Duhak zijn al door de Turkse luchtmacht gebombardeerd.
De invasie die nu aan de gang is moet worden gezien als een slag in het gezicht van de „soevereiniteit van Irak“ waar blijkbaar weinig belang aan wordt gehecht. Wat de invasie vooral duidelijk maakt is dat Turkije en de VS oorlog willen. Zij geven geen enkel gehoor aan alle pogingen om het conflict met vreedzame middelen op te lossen. De ware terroristen zijn diegenen die het volkerenrecht negeren en de oorlog tegen iedere prijs willen aanwakkeren. De invasie door Turkije in Zuid Koerdistan is een daad van internationaal terrorisme!
Wij veroordelen de invasie in de meeste scherp bewoordingen en protesteren met alle kracht tegen deze nieuwe aanval op het Koerdische volk.
Stop de terroristische invasie van Turkije in Iraaks Koerdistan die een schending is van het volkerenrecht!
Turkije weg uit Koerdistan, weg uit Irak!

Turkey extends war on PKK in Iraq
Turkey: Parliament has extended by a year the military’s mandate to attack Kurdish guerillas in northern Iraq.
MPs voted 452 to 23 on Tuesday to extend the mandate.
MP Gultan Kisanak said that the decision contradicted ongoing government initiatives to achieve a peaceful solution to the country’s long-running conflict with Kurdistan Workers Party militants.
