Spanish and Portuguese classical music in the Netherlands

Dom in Utrecht, by Pieter Jansz. Saenredam

Today, again a classical music concert in the cathedral of Utrecht in the Netherlands.

On the outside of the building hangs a big reproduction of a seventeenth century depiction of the interior by painter Pieter Saenredam.

Inside, today not Bach, but two Spanish composers and one Portuguese composer from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

Most of the concert was vocals (five female, three male): the Missa de Sancto Martino (St. Martin’s mass), by Juan Bautista Comes.

In between the parts of this mass, there was clavichord instrumental music twice, played by Jan Jansen.

First, Tento do Segundo Tom, by Pedro de Araujo from Portugal.

Later, Tiento del sexto tone, by Antonio de Cabezón; see also here.
