Drilling in Alaska’s Bristol Bay threatens endangered whale populations

There may be fewer than 300 North Pacific right whales compared to a pre-whaling population of more than 11,000.

30 May 2007

Anchorage, Alaska, US – Oil and gas drilling in Bristol Bay could threaten the eastern North Pacific right whale, the most endangered whale population in the world, according to a new WWF report released at the 59th meeting of the International Whaling Commission.

A planned lease sale area in Bristol Bay overlaps with critical habitat designated for the eastern North Pacific right, as well as for other endangered cetacean species including bowhead, blue, fin, sei, humpback and sperm whales.

“Offshore oil and gas development in Bristol Bay would be the wrong step for the right whale,” said Margaret Williams, director of WWF’s Bering Sea Programme. …

On 9 January 2007, US President George Bush rescinded a long-standing presidential moratorium that prohibited drilling in Bristol Bay.

  3. Every summer, hundreds of veterans head to Bristol Bay, Alaska to earn a living as commercial fishermen, but Koch-connected mine development is putting those jobs – and the local habitat – in serious risk.

EPA has taken the first step to stop development of the mine under the Clean Water Act, but they’ve opened up the process for one more public comment period before making a final determination.

Please sign VoteVets’ letter to the EPA asking them to protect the jobs at Bristol Bay before the end of the 60-day comment period.

    Thanks for all you do!

    Dear Activist,

Every summer, hundreds of veterans head to Bristol Bay, Alaska to earn a living as commercial fishermen.

It’s not easy work and it separates them from their families – again – but in this tough economy it pays well and takes care of things back home.

Unfortunately, two foreign mining companies with connections to the Koch Brothers are trying to dig a mine near the Bay that would destroy these jobs and lay waste to the environment.

Because of our unique voice as veterans and military-family members, we were asked to take action on this issue. It was a no-brainer.

Add your name to VoteVets’ letter to the Environmental Protection Agency we’ll share it with the EPA before the end of their public comment period.

Bristol Bay is one of those places where you can still find true solitude while hunting and fishing.

It’s a place where many veterans travel as tourists, earn a living as fishing guides, professional fisherman, or work on the shore supporting the fishing industry.

Sign our letter and join us in defense of their jobs.
