Lewis Libby is NOT a fall guy or a scapegaot … he is merely the FIRST
of the Iraq war conspirators to be caught, tried and convicted.

We must NOT let Libby be turned into a sympathetic character .. . he is
a lying thug and is one of the people directly responsible for the
debacle in Iraq in which thousands of American soldiers have been killed
    or maimed.

The ONLY way to get at Cheney and Rove (and all the rest of the
war-mongering gang) is to keep Libby in a position where he is willing
to trade his testimony regarding his co-conspirators in order to reduce
his jail time. If he is pardoned, Libby will have NO INCENTIVE to make a
deal … and Cheney will walk free … and will sleep soundly … and
will laugh with scorn at us for being so stupid as to let Bush pardon
Libby without ever having to worry about paying a price for that pardon.

I will simply quote what Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison said at the time
of the impeachment of President Clinton:

” *[S]something needs to be said that is a clear message that our rule
of law is intact and the standards for perjury and obstruction of
justice are not gray.* And I think it is most important that we make
that statement and that it be on the record for history.I very much
worry that with the evidence that we have seen that grand juries across
America are going to start asking questions about what is obstruction of
justice, what is perjury. *And I don’t want there to be any lessening of
the standard. Because our system of criminal justice depends on people
telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. That is
the lynch pin of our criminal justice system and I don’t want it to be
    faded in any way.”* http://tinyurl.com/aqh93

As Senator Ted Kennedy writes today:

    – – – – – – –
Let’s be clear. The conviction of Scooter Libby is just the tip of
the iceberg in an administration filled with lies and corruption. As
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has said, Libby’s trial “revealed
deeper truths about Vice President Cheney’s role in this sordid
    affair.”

This is an administration unwilling to be honest with the American
people about why we’re in Iraq — unwilling to admit that our
soldiers are now caught in the midst of a brutal civil war —
unwilling to change course and bring our troops home.

It’s also an Administration more than willing to put Americans at
risk who work to protect our security — people like Valerie Plame
    — when they have a political grudge to carry out.

President Bush may think he can pardon Scooter Libby without
consequences for himself. He may think the American people don’t
care how flagrantly he abuses the rule of law.

It’s time he heard the truth from the American people:

    Sincerely,

    Senator Edward M. Kennedy

  2. *WHY we need to make a noise against the pardon…*

The reason for us to make as much noise as possible against Bush’s
    pardoning Libby is this:

Right now, Bush is focusing on his “legacy” and his place in history. He
is collecting money to build the most expensive, and largest,
presidential “library” in the the history of this country. Bush plans
(within that library) to hire an entire department of writers and
historians whose only task will be to write articles and books
whitewashing and burnishing Bush’s record. With the almost unlimited
funds the Bush family seems to have access to, Bush Jr. will be able to
CREATE his own version of history.

It is up to us to make such a loud noise that Bush will become fearful
that our noise will make it into the history books in spite of his
herculean efforts to whitewash his record.

If Bush comes to believe that, by pardoning Lewis Libby for perjury and
obstruction of justice, he will be vilified in the history books, he may
    think twice about the pardon.

On the other hand, if the rightwingers are able to make a bigger splash
and a bigger noise than we make, he will be encouraged to pardon Libby
    — and the historians will never know there was much objection to the
    pardon.

    It’s all up to us.

How do we want Bush to be viewed by historians? It is up to us to CREATE
a record that cannot be erased.

Are perjury and obstruction of justice serious matters that should be
punished? Well, Newt Gingrich and Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison think so.

NEWT GINGRICH: “I have no choice except to move forward and say that
you cannot accept felonies and you cannot accept perjury in your highest
    officials.’

    http://www.nytimes.com/reuters/washington/politics-usa-politics-gingrich.html

SENATOR Kay Bailey HUTCHISON: “*[S]something needs to be said that is
a clear message that our rule of law is intact and the standards for
perjury and obstruction of justice are not gray.* And I think it is most
important that we make that statement and that it be on the record for
history.I very much worry that with the evidence that we have seen that
grand juries across America are going to start asking questions about
what is obstruction of justice, what is perjury. *And I don’t want there
to be any lessening of the standard. Because our system of criminal
justice depends on people telling the truth, the whole truth, and
nothing but the truth. That is the lynch pin of our criminal justice
system and I don’t want it to be faded in any way.”
