USA: West Virginia miners die; again

This video is called Strike84 Images from the 1984 Miners Strike UK.

The next chain in a long line of tragedies, in a society where bosses’ profits often are said to have more value than miners’ lives …

Associated Press reports:

2 Miners Die in Roof Collapse at West Virginia Mine; Bodies Are Being Brought to Surface

CUCUMBER, W.Va. Jan 13, 2007 — A roof collapsed in a mine Saturday morning, killing two miners, authorities said.

The miners apparently were caught when a pillar fell, said Ron Wooten, director of the state Office of Miners’ Health, Safety and Training. Wooten said rescuers were bringing their bodies to the surface.

  1. Hi Kitty. Thanks for your comments at my site. I think that I’v been able to correct the problem, and I was able to read your comments. If you go to my site, click on the link for Brian Blakeley. Brian is a union officer in Canada, he has posted some historic film footage of miner’s struggles in Kentucky. I was privileged to have been in Harlan County Kentucky for the strike documented in Barbara Kopple’s film, Harlan County, USA. Also, I can’t say enough good things about Jordan Barab’s
Confined Space. He blogs on workplace health and safety issues and the politics behind them. He’s a wonderful guy.

  2. Hi Jon, thanks for those comments and links! The graphic is [UPDATE 2008: was] from South Africa, as shown when you move your mouse across pictures on my blog, you see captions; at least in Internet Ecplorer, somehow I don’t see them in Firefox.
